ABOUT AKEL

why I’m Running

I believe as a State Committee Member and District Leader I would be able to act as a liaison between the community and our electeds to properly address community issues.

I am an everyday Brooklynite who has lived in the 43rd Assembly District for over 20+ years. I know what it is like through firsthand experience to work two jobs to make ends meet, and having to deal with issues such as renting from an exploitative landlord.

My integrity is dear to me, and I will not be bought out by wealthy developers and other special interest groups that do not hold the best interests of the residents of the 43rd Assembly District at heart.

ABout me

My name is Akel Williams and I am an immigrant, born on the twin island republic of Trinidad & Tobago. I attended middle school at M.S. 61 in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, and then went on to Brooklyn Technical High School where I majored in Computer Science and graduated in 2005. In 2013, I obtained my B.A. from SUNY University at Buffalo as a Joint Major in Political Science & African American Studies. Whilst attending the University at Buffalo, I became a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, served on the Student Assembly, and on the Executive Board of the Caribbean Students Association for a University-wide student body of over 20,000+ students.

During my time at UB, an African American Studies course sparked a strong interest in social justice issues. I became aware of the disparities, particularly in education, and began to gain an understanding of how systemic racism functioned within the United States. Understanding that I was lucky to have had access to various opportunities, being aided by others, and looking back at my own path; I try to live by a quote once shared with me “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

I currently work as a Dangerous Goods Cargo Agent for a major American airliner. My most recent professional experiences have included work as a Community Outreach Associate for a network of schools where I was mainly responsible for student enrollment, and previously as an Operations Coordinator for a large school network.
